Oritain, a global leader in authenticity verification, is seeking a talented and experienced Geospatial Data Scientist/GIS Data Scientist to join their innovative team. The successful applicant can be based at either our Auckland CBD office or our Dunedin Central Headquarters. We have additional hubs in London, Washington DC and Zug. Oritain provides data insights and scientific traceability to some of the biggest brands in the world. By helping these brands understand the origin of their products, Oritain builds trust and integrity within their supply chains while addressing critical issues such as deforestation and modern slavery.

As a Geospatial Data Scientist/GIS Data Scientist at Oritain, you will play a key role in developing innovative geospatial solutions to enhance existing products, enable new products and to support business decisions and strategies. You will work closely with R&D, mapping, and other teams within Oritain to integrate spatial analysis into existing workflows and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, clean and process geospatial data from various sources.
  • Conduct spatial analysis using GIS tools combined with statistical methods to derive actionable insights.
  • Develop and implement predictive models (ie: isocapes) and algorithms based on spatial data to solve business and operational challenges.
  • Create visualisations, including interactive maps and dashboards, as well as reports to communicate geospatial insights effectively.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in geospatial data science and apply them to enhance authenticity verification processes.
  • Support the development of geospatial database systems.
  • Provide expert guidance and support to internal and external stakeholders on geospatial data science projects.

Requirements

  • It is highly desirable that you have a relevant tertiary qualification in the Geospatial or GIS field. A relevant qualification in a quantitative field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics, with strong experience working with GIS date would be favourably considered also.
  • You must have a minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working as a Geospatial Data Scientist/GIS Data Scientist or in a similar role.
  • Be proficient in working with GIS databases, different GIS file formats and data types (vector/raster). data conversion, transformation between datums, data and metadata cleaning and maintenance.
  • Experience in the use of open-source tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS, understanding and use of spatial statistics and experience in geospatial statistical modelling and machine learning algorithms for spatial data.
  • Strong programming skills, including developing geospatial models and solutions using languages such as Python and R, in conjunction with open-source packages for these languages. Along with the use of parallel processing for computational efficiency.
  • Competent with geospatial visualisations and animations.
  • A broad knowledge of technology and tools used in product software development, such as VS Code, Conda and GitHub.
  • Experience in other languages used in geospatial programming such as C++, C#, .NET, HTML and JavaScript would be a good to have.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and collaborate with stakeholders from different disciplines.
  • A passion for data-driven decision-making and making a positive impact on supply chain transparency and authenticity verification.
