Azure Platform Engineer

Initially formed as a Cloud Infrastructure team, we are now evolving into a Platform Engineering team to support our growing business. Our mission is to enable Product teams to deliver value quickly, reliably, and securely. We aim to improve productivity and time to value through different capabilities such as improved Developer Experience (DevEx), streamlined workflows, intuitive tools, and comprehensive support. Our goal is to encourage teams to work autonomously, efficiently, and to continuously improve.

As a Platform Engineer at DrDoctor, you'll design, build, and deploy scalable, maintainable solutions that impact our engineering organization. You'll work with technologies like Azure, Container Instances, Bicep, and Serverless microservices, collaborating with diverse teams and guiding their cloud journey.

Our operational model empowers engineers and teams to own features from inception through to deployment and production. Our motto: "You build it, you run it.”

OK, that’s me, but who are DrDoctor?

Take a look at our careers page ([https://drdoctor.teamtailor.com/>) to find out a bit more about our mission, vision, and impact!

But ultimately, we 💚 the NHS and want to help it work better. We radically transform the delivery of health services to make healthcare work for everyone – for patients, doctors, administrative teams and taxpayers.

What would I be doing day to day?

One of the great things about a scale-up is that every day is different and there is always an opportunity to get involved in something outside of your ‘BAU’!

However, the key things you could expect would include:

  • Designing, documenting, building and maintaining high-quality self-service solutions to enhance developer experience and speed up delivery whilst considering the cost-effectiveness of that solution.
  • Working across DevSecOps domains including security, automation, observability, recovery & resilience.
  • Maintaining our cloud-native infrastructure capability through continuous iterative improvement of infrastructure, processes, and products.
  • Monitoring and providing support for a wide range of services running within the cloud-native infrastructure, and independently identifying and resolving a broad range of issues that might arise.
  • Overseeing patching, accessing, and assisting in the resolution of critical incidents.
  • Ability to adopt, configure, and maintain third party products, taking into account concerns such as security, cost, and functionality.
  • Assessing and optimising operational processes and ways of working by staying up to date with changes in the industry and adapting industry best practices to suit DrDoctor setup and needs.

OK, I’m interested. What experience do I need to have?

Must haves

  • Software engineering background - you don't need to be a fully fledged developer, but do need to be handy with code and able to build automation tools.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure cloud services via Infrastructure as Code (IaC), particularly with PaaS services.
  • Experience designing, building and maintaining secure cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (we mostly use Bicep and a bit of Terraform), in alignment with the Azure Well-Architected Framework.
  • Experience designing, building and maintaining observability tooling and CI/CD pipelines (we use Azure DevOps and Octopus).
  • Experience building internal platforms, capabilities, tools and guardrails to provide a seamless developer experience, empowering developers with self-service solutions
  • Strong communication, motivational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across various functions.
  • Innovative mindset, able to challenge the status quo to ensure our solutions are the best they can be.
  • Experience working in a agile working environment, and understand Scrum and Kanban artefacts and events.

Nice to haves

  • You have an understanding of Security, Networking and Databases - Application Gateways, Express Route, VNets, Private and Service Endpoints, Firewalls.
  • You have an awareness of security processes, DevOps security tools and security best practices for securing software in cloud environments.
  • You have an awareness of standards like ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, NIST and CIS.
  • You have worked in a small but growing start-up environment

We know from research and experience that candidates may not apply if they don’t think they meet 100% of our requirements. If you don’t tick all the boxes but feel you would be a good fit, we would still love to hear from you. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive culture!

Just to let you know too, we will need you to have the Right To Work in the UK, and as we work closely with the NHS, if we get to the stage where we make you an offer to join us, we will also need to undertake a DBS check.

We are perfect for each other, what are the next steps?

We are currently recruiting heavily and have a lot of CVs to go through. However, we don’t wait for roles to close before going through your CV. We will be in touch in a few days to let you know if we think we might be a match, and if we are not. Unfortunately, because we get so many CV’s we are not able to send a personalised reply if it’s not a match. However, if you want more details as to why, just drop us a note and we will arrange to get some feedback over to you.

If it’s a match, then we will arrange a time to talk to you on a quick 30 minute call. It’s just an informal chat so you can relax! We will tell you more about the role, the team and why you should want to join us.

If we continue, then we will invite you to meet some of the team, most likely virtually. Some our roles will also be subject to completing an assessment or a role related exercise.

We get there are a lot of great roles out there, so we will make sure to get through the rounds as quickly as possible. All we ask is you keep us up to date with your plans.

I can’t wait to get started, what are the perks?

An awesome team and mission? Oh, you want more?

We keep all of our Perks and Benefits updated on our careers page [https://drdoctor.teamtailor.com/> – we like to think there is something for everyone! Let us know if you have any questions regarding them.

As DrDoctor has grown, we are seeing more of our people wanting to socialise in different ways.

Whilst we know that some of us love to go to the pub, we want to make sure we are including a wide variety of activities and events for our teams to enjoy each other's company, we aim to continue creating an open space for anyone and everyone to suggest how they’d like to spend time with their teams.

We love a Summer and Christmas party and regular company/team socials and away days. In the past year or so, we have enjoyed AI Games, Agile Games, Terrarium Making, Wreath Making to name a few. Over the past 12 months we've celebrated Holi Festival, International Women’s Day, Pride celebrations and our 11th Birthday!
