About the opportunity

The Technical Officer will work in the Camperdown campus in the Carslaw Building to deliver timely and effective technical services within the TSS technical support groups to achieve enhanced education/research support outcomes. This includes provision of hands-on support, primarily for undergraduate practical classes as required, maintenance of equipment and safe working environment, provision of technical advice to users (academic staff/teaching staff/researchers), protocol optimisation (where required), sourcing and preparation of consumables, and assist in the writing of safety and procedural documentation.

The Technical Officer will assist in implementing new processes, procedures, systems, and ways of working within the work area to improve customer service delivery, efficiency and resource utilisation as directed. The Technical Officer will provide training to facility users in the safe operation of equipment, facilities, and general procedures. The role also supports the Senior Technical Officer in ensuring that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards and other compliance requirements of the work area are met and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy and relevant legislation.

There is a requirement in this role for the successful candidate to be able collect live samples from the ocean so ability to swim/ snorkel is essential

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • support the agreed delivery of technical services in the designated area, and facilitating Biology classes within the Laboratories
  • deliver training to facility users in the safe operation of equipment, facilities, and general procedures
  • support the implementation of service improvements and service excellence within the responsibility area
  • contribute to a positive, professional, customer-focused team culture
  • support the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, ensuring that the work area’s education/research requirements are effectively met
  • champion best practices, workplace health and safety, compliance, and risk management
  • seek and act on opportunities to cross-skill, including drawing on the knowledge and expertise of others
  • provide project management or project support as required, collaborating with other TSS, PSU or central project managers/teams as required

About you:

  • a degree in the relevant discipline or equivalent extensive laboratory experience
  • relevant experience in laboratories dealing with Biology (specifically animal biology, marine biology, evolution and ecology) is highly regarded
  • experience in collecting samples in the field, either terrestrial or aquatic
  • relevant experience preparing, maintaining and storing specimens/cultures
  • fitness ability to do manual lifting as required in the labs
  • ability to swim/ snorkel and collect live samples
  • relevant experience in laboratories dealing with Biology is highly regarded
  • driver’s license preferred to move equipment, deliveries etc
  • demonstrated ability to establish and maintain working relationships with customers
  • working knowledge of laboratory regulations
  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • ability to apply and contribute to the development, maintenance, and review of standard technical documentation and operating procedures.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
